In the '70s, when disco ruled, people favored clothing and accessories that were considered excessive, even tacky, by mainstream Americans. Fashion standards included thick, blue eye shadow, tie-dye shirts and platform shoes. Jewelry was just as edgy; in fact, the flashier the better. Disco hoop earrings were dramatic, over-sized baubles, designed to make a statement. The sometimes gaudy hoop earrings were the embodiment of the anti-establishment movement that came in the aftermath of the Vietnam War.
Earrings as a Personal Statement
A "New York Times" article about the comeback of the clip-on earring was written in 2007, but it could have just as easily been written during the disco hoop era in the '70s. In the article, Ward Landrigan, who was once the director of the jewelry department at Sotheby's Auction House, said, "Earrings are still the most important thing a woman puts on. It used to be that going out without them was like being naked."
Hoop Earring Construction
Disco hoop earrings came in many sizes, mediums and colors, although large wood and gold hoops were favorites. As vibrant, psychedelic colors ruled the era, manufacturers produced metal hoop earrings in every color. If you were part of the disco scene, it wasn't unusual to own disco hoops in every shade of the rainbow. The earrings included both pierced and clip-on versions.
Comfort
As with most '70s clothing, particularly platform shoes, hoop earrings were all about making a statement, not about comfort. While they were made as a clip-on accessory initially, when piercing became popular, the clip-on earring went out of fashion. The downfall of the dangling, hoop earring meant for pierced ears is that the weight of the earring often tears or stretches the earlobe.
The Retro Disco Hoop Makes a Comeback
Fashion dictates that "what is old is new again" at some point. Large disco hoop earrings have come back into style in various forms since the '70s. The first cover of "Elle" magazine in 1985 featured Yasmin La Bon wearing what was described as "one of the decade's most recognizable accessories---oversized hoop earrings." In 2011, the "New York Times" featured a layout on current Paris fashions. Among the accessories used to highlight the new styles for the season were multi-layered hoop earrings. Even First Lady Michelle Obama was photographed in "New York Magazine" in 2011 wearing a simple pair of '70s, hoop earrings.
Adapting Old Fashion to New Fashion
Since heavy, pierced hoop earrings tear and stretch the delicate earlobe, women are looking at clip-on earrings once again. While it solves the problem of earlobe damage, it comes with its own problems. Clip-on earrings aren't secured the way a pierced earring is, so the earring can become dislodged during normal movements -- and certainly during nights on the town. A dab of spirit gum or eyelash glue will hold a clip-on earring in place so a person can dance, shop and socialize without fear of losing an earring.
