How to Sew Rain Slickers

The coating on laminated fabrics used to make rain slickers will repel water until it is pierced, so avoid making unnecessary holes when you sew rain slickers. When making a rain slicker from a pattern, it is a good idea to make one from regular fabric before sewing the laminated fabric. Then, if the fit is wrong the pattern can be altered without ruining the laminate. Also, read pattern directions carefully and sew slowly to prevent stray stitches.

Instructions

Place the pattern pieces on the laminated fabric, and set the pattern weights, or cans of food, on the pattern pieces. You cannot safely pin the pattern to the laminated fabric because extra pin holes let water leak in.

Cut out around the pattern pieces using the scissors. Cut neatly and slowly, so the cut edges are smooth.

Line up the fabric pieces, according to the pattern directions, and wrap blue painter's tape around the edges. Using painter's tape is as close as you can get to pinning laminated fabric without actually making pin-holes in it.

Sew the pieces together with the sewing machine set to make a long, straight stitch. You cannot press the seam open because the fabric will melt, so if you need to finish the seam, fold both layers the same way and top stitch 1/4 inch from the seam-line.
