Furoshiki is a traditional cloth that has been used in Japanese culture since the early 1600s. The cloth is capable of being tied in various ways to create bags. Today, because of the green movement, the bag, which has reusable and multiple uses, has become a burgeoning fashion trend in the United States. In 2006, furoshiki was promoted by the Japanese Minister of the Environment to increase use.

History

History of the furoshiki began from the Edo Period, in the early 1600s. Furoshiki literally means "bath spread," as it was originally used to hold clothing, shoes and personal belongings while attending at the Japanese public bath. Users would wrap and fold it in various manners. As use of the furoshiki expanded beyond the bathhouses, merchants began using the cloth to carry their goods to the market and as a form of wrapping paper and gift carrier.

Decline

During World War II, use of the furoshiki declined as Japan was introduced to Westernized bags such as shopping bags and hand bags. However, since the furoshiki has so many usage options, proponents of the Green Movement have pushed for a resurgence of usage.

Features and Dimensions

Furoshiki are square textiles that are made out of sturdy, resilient fabrics. Cotton, silk, rayon, and nylon are common fabrics found in Furoshiki. The exact size of the furoshiki is not set in stone; however, the common size of the fabric is 17 inches on all sides or 27 inches on each side.

Additional Information

Furoshikis feature designs on the material. Traditional Japanese patterns and images are the most common; however, Westernized versions of the cloth feature bright colors and geometric patterns. You can also use the furoshiki as a gift wrap or tapestry.
