A brooch is a large decorative metal pin. Modern brooches are often painted with enamel or have gemstones set into them. Brooches can be pinned to lapels or used to hold up articles of clothing such as a cloak for a period costume. A bent pin can cause the brooch to fall off, as it will not stay fastened in the ball clasp. Bent pins can also cause the pin stem to rip holes into fabric. Straighten a pin back on your brooch with a pair of needle nose pliers.
Instructions
- 1
Place the brooch on your workspace with the pin-back facing you.
2Grasp the stem of the pin with a pair of needle nose pliers. Press the stem flat by applying even pressure onto it with the pliers jaws.
3Grasp the end of the stem that is closest to the hinge of the pin with the pliers. Hold the pin down with your left hand and slowly pull the pin stem straight with the pliers.
4Straighten the tip by bending it back up so that it aligns with the rest of the pin stem. File the end to a point with a fine grade metal emery board or jeweler's file.
