This simple tote bag has two zippered sides that hold game boards, plus two removable zippered pouches for playing pieces. The roomy interior of the bag will hold another boxed game as well. Add a sturdy over-the-shoulder strap and you're ready to take your games anywhere.
Instructions
- 1
Cut two 18-inch by 18-inch squares of cotton duck and two 18-inch by 18-inch squares of liner material. Cut a strip of material 4 inches wide by 54 inches long to form the gusset between the front and back of the tote bag.
2Place one 18-inch square of duck material right side up and one 18-inch square of liner material face down on top of it. Sew a 3/8-inch seam across the top of the section with a running stitch. Iron the seam open and pin one zipper face down with the teeth right against the seam. Sew all the way around the zipper using a regular length stitch and the zipper foot. There will be a -inch ease on both ends of the zipper to accommodate side seams. Repeat with the second side of 18-inch duck and liner materials.
3Turn the zippered section right side out. Use the seam ripper to open the top of the zipper. Pin the gusset to the side, around the bottom and up the other side of the zippered section, right sides together. Use a zigzag stitch to sew all around the three sides. Trim closely. Repeat with the second side to form the entire tote bag body.
4Use dressmaker's marking chalk to mark a section 2 inches down the seam on both sides. Pin the strap to the mark and with a zigzag stitch sew down the edge of the strap, across the bottom of the strap, up the other side and across the top to secure the strap to the side seam. Repeat on the other side.
5Make two game piece pouches. Pin one section of 6 inch by 6 inch cotton duck and one 6 inch by 6 inch section of liner right sides together. Set the sewing machine on regular width stitch and sew all around three sides of the square. Turn the material right sides out, iron and turn the raw edges in inch.
6Stitch close to the edge to close the square. Fold in half wrong sides together and stitch the edge sides closed. Attach a strip of hook and loop material to the two top edges. Make a second pouch. Place another strip of hook and loop material on the backside of each pouch. Mark a line inside the tote bag on each side and place the second side of the hook and loop fastener there. These detachable pouches hold game pieces, pencils and score sheets, dice or decks of playing cards.
