Sequins are used in a variety of fashion accessories and apparel, as well as various holiday and home decorations. There are several types of sequins, each based on the intended application. For example, decorations do not have to withstand the wear and tear of apparel, so the sequins used are not as durable.
Sequined Fabric
Sequined fabric is made with sequins already sewn into the stitches by an industrial-grade sewing machine. Because of this, the fabric is designed specifically for apparel use and is durable and stronger than applying sequins to fabric by hand. Fabrics used include silk and faux silk for a luxurious feel and look.
Discs
Sequin discs are perhaps the most common form of sequin. These round fashion accessories are often strung by hand onto jewelry or sewn on specific areas of apparal. The discs come in a variety of sizes, some made just for the piece of clothing to which they will be attached. The sequin disc is sold in shiny, bright colors in its modern form or as a matte version of pastel or muted colors in the vintage version.
Sequin Shapes
There are numerous varieties of shaped sequins that are made to reflect the most light. The sequin is crafted as a three-dimensional item, rather than the flat disc of other sequins. The bends and curves of the sequins are what creates the maximum reflection. The shapes most common are hearts, diamonds, stars and sunbursts.
Pailettes
The pailette sequin is made just like the disc sequin, yet the hole for stringing is set off to one side of the sequin. This allows for dangling once the sequin is sewn onto a piece of fabric. The dangling design is ideal for costumes and other types of clothing that is intended to grab attention.
