The Balenciaga name became popular in 1915 when Christobal Balenciaga opened a design house in Spain. Balenciaga fashion has had ups and downs since the time of Christobal, with its record low in 1997. To combat this, Nicolas Ghesquire was hired as the company's creative director. He brought back the Balenciaga name with his handbag line that came out in 2000. Since then, Balenciaga has been at the height of couture handbag fashion around the world. Many companies have tried to replicate the Balenciaga look and pass it off as authentic. These tips will help consumers spot a fake Balenciaga bag when shopping.

Inspect the leather of the bag closely. Balenciaga bags are trademarked by their soft, extremely thin leather that is distressed but not cracked. Fake bags will look intentionally distressed and uniformly "cracked."
2Look to see if the leather is shiny or dull. Balenciaga bags will not be shiny and the leather is more natural looking with a weathered appearance.
3Take everything out of the bag. If it stands alone, it is a fake. Balenciaga bags will fall in on themselves as the leather is so thin.
4Look for the mirror in the bag. If it is wrapped in plastic, it is a fake. Balenciaga bags will not have a mirror, or if it does, it will not be wrapped in plastic.
5Check the hardware on the bag. If the rivets and zipper are shiny silver or gold, it is a fake. Balenciaga bags will always have brass or matte silver hardware.
