Japanese Obi Styles

The kimono has been a part of Japanese culture since the rise of the Edo period of the 1600s. The kimono is usually accompanied by an obi. An obi is a sash that is traditionally worn just bellow the bosom. The obi and other items are used to conceal the breast and hip areas of women. The obi can be made from a variety of materials that signify formality. Different heights of the obi also represent martial status. The obi is not as significant as it once was in Japanese culture, but in some antique shops you can look to spend thousands on them.

The Maru Obi: Exquisite, Grandiose and Heavy

The maru obi is, bar none, the most exquisite style of obi. It is a symbol of the old world. It was thick, heavy, ornamental and high in detail. It wasn't out of the ordinary for the maru obi to be turned around if one side was soiled. This style of obi is not used very much today because of its weight and formality. It is most commonly used in formal settings such as a wedding.

The Fukoro Obi: Formal, Functional and Light

The fukoro obi has taken the place of the maru obi in a lot of ways. Though the maru obi is still considered the most formal of all obis, the fukoro is an extremely close second. The fukoro is an evolution of the maru. The fukoro shares the decadence of the maru without all the weight. The fukoro is a much narrower obi. Its lining is made out of silk, which takes away from the weight. Oftentimes it is hard to tell the difference between the maru and fukoro obi.

The Nagoya Obi: Simple, Progressive and Elegant

The nagoya obi isn't as formal as the fukoro or maru obi. The nagoya obi isn't the least formal of the bunch, either. It is the Western equivalent to a knee-length skirt. The nagoya obi gets its name from the city of origin, a Japanese port city called Nagoya. This obi was developed in the early 1900s. Before this obi, all obis were tied in a series of two knots. The nagoya obi has special stitching that allows its wearer to use only one knot. The nagoya is by no means plain, but it is much more conservative than its predecessors.

The Hanhaba Obi: Simple, Light Comfortable

The hanhaba obi is the most informal style of obi. This obi would be used for completely informal settings. It is customary to use a hanhaba obi to do chores around the house, or during leisurely activity in a private setting. This would be the the Western equivalent to a t-shirt and jeans. The hanhaba obi is most commonly made from light and inexpensive fabrics like cotton. It also would not be uncommon for a hanhaba style obi to be made from remnants of worn-out or old maru obi.
