How to Tell the Difference Between Coach Handbags & Knock Offs

Coach designer handbags are highly desirable, stylish and expensive. That's why you'll often see Coach knockoffs, or cheaply made counterfeit copies, for sale on online auction sites and from private sellers. Such places don't always advertise the fact that the handbags they are selling are knockoffs. Protect yourself by knowing what to look for to tell the difference between Coach handbags and knockoffs, so you don't unwittingly pay real money for a fake bag.

Examine the pattern on the fabric. Make sure it has the traditional "C" pattern with the double-Cs in neat lines on the bag, and that the tips of the Cs are touching. Often the fabric on a knockoff looks much like real Coach fabric but has something just a little different. Make sure the pattern is not crooked and that the Cs don't look more like Gs. These are clear signs the bag is a knockoff.

Ask for the dust bag that comes with all real Coach bags. Make sure it looks like a real Coach dust bag, which is made of canvas and is brown with a red drawstring. If the dust bag is made of mesh or another cheaper fabric, or the bag doesn't come with a dust bag at all, you can bet you're dealing with a knockoff.

Look inside the bag. You should see a large leather badge bearing the Coach name brand logo, along with a certificate of authenticity. Make sure the certificate has a serial number stamped underneath that starts with "No." and has the "o" underlined. If the bag doesn't have this certificate or has one without a serial number, it's a knockoff.

Examine the metal hardware on the bag. Make sure all the larger pieces of hardwaresuch as zippers, rings and claspsare stamped with the Coach name. All zippers should also bear the "YKK" manufacturer name. The absence of this stamp means the bag's a knockoff.

Feel the tabs or key fobs the bag came with. Make sure the tag is leather, or metal with the Coach name engraved on it. Real Coach bags never use a plastic key fob tag, so if you find one, you are holding a clever fake.
