How to Sew Yarn in a Headband

A headband can add some flair to any woman's hair, whether it's worn during a lazy summer afternoon or a glitzy night on the town. Those who enjoy a one-of-a-kind style can customize their own headbands with little more than some yarn, a needle and thread. Design this accessory to match a specific outfit, or create a design that you can wear with lots of different apparel to enhance your unique look.

Instructions

Select a headband you can customize. This item should be made from fabric that you'll be able to sew through with a needle and thread. Also, find piece of yarn to incorporate onto the headband. Choose a string in a color that will match your accessory.

Lay the yarn in a pattern on top of the headband. Start at one side of the headband and pin the end of the yarn in place. Weave the yarn upward on the top of the headband, creating a swirly line with the string. Make loops with the yarn along the way to create a whimsical look. Pin the yarn in place as you lay it along the top of the headband.

Use a needle and thread to begin sewing the yarn to the headband. Start at the end of the headband where you first pinned the yarn in place. String the thread through the yarn and headband, and secure it with a knot.

Make a running stitch along the yarn by sewing in and out of the fabric. Keep even spacing between each stitch, and make these spaces less than a 1/2 inch apart. Continue this stitch along the entirety of the yarn design. When you reach the end of the yarn, secure the thread with a knot and cut it.

Try on the headband. See if you'd like to add other colors of yarn onto the accessory, too. If you do, repeat steps two through four.
