How to tie a Gele (African Head piece/Scarf)

In many parts of south and western Africa, it has long been traditional for women to wear a head tie that covers their hair. Each nation has its own traditions and names for the tie; Ghanaians wear a "duku" on religious festivals, while South Africans use a white head tie to cover their hair in churches, and Nigerians wear a "gele." Geles are usually more elaborate than the head ties of other Africans, and are made from a piece of cloth known as an aso-oke.

Instructions

    1

Fold your aso-oke in half lengthwise repeatedly, until its width is about 6 inches. Wrap the aso-oke around your head, letting the right side of it extend about one and a half times as much as the left.

    2

Push the left side of the aso-oke in while crossing the right side over. Keep both ends of the aso-oke out while doing this. Pull the ends as tight as you're comfortable. Push the left side in, while pulling the right, for the best fit.

    3

Push the ride side in from where it touches the left side, without pulling it all the way through, to form a bow. The bow can be moved to the front, to either side of the head, or left on the back. Spreading the two ends out creates a rose petal effect.
