Italian Types of Hats

The history of hat production in Italy goes back to the 1600s, when the country's north became the birthplace of this industry thanks to the good timing and the Italians' innate sense of style. Following skills of masters who have made this accessory since ancient times, Italians developed the craft to turn it into an industry that remains a symbol of style and elegance.

The history of the famous Borsalino hat goes back to 1857, when two Italian brothers---Giuseppe and Lazzaro Borsalino---began manufacturing this fur-felt accessories in a workshop in Allessandria in the north. With their soft wool, linen, and cotton touch and classic fedora look, the Borsalinos quickly conquered the market, becoming famous as one of the world's finest hats. Borsalinos became more popular in the 20th century, when they were traditionally worn by Italian mafia members, such as Al Capone, and have been associated with the mafia ever since.

These oval, flat-topped hats with rigid flat brims, were created in the 1880s and were traditionally worn by Gondoliers on the waterways of Venice, hence the origins of the name. In the early 20th century, they became quite trendy and were worn both at casual and formal events, even in a combination with a blazer. Popular artists such as Fred Astaire have shown off this piece. There were even rumors that the Skimmer was used by U.S. FBI agents during the pre-war period.

Leghorn hats are made of a type of Italian wove and plaited wheat straw that is cut green and then bleached. These featherweight, open-weave pieces take their name after the port of Livorno and Leghorn on the western edge of Tuscany where the straw---that it is made of---is produced. Tuscany has been the heart of the straw industry since the end of the 1970s.

Although this type of hat does not have its roots in Italy, it became popular after an Italian lawmaker had an interesting incident involving one. In 1869, member of parliament Cristiano Lobbia, was mugged and hit on the head with a stick that dented his hat. An entrepreneur took advantage of the popularity of the event to sell the "Lobbia" Homburg. The Lobbia is stiff felt with a dent through the middle of the crown, as well as a brim placed in an upward curl. Usually, it is made of wool or fur felt. Winston Churchill has often been portrayed wearing a Lobbia.
