How to Remove a Lens From a Glasses Frame

A person may need to remove a lens from the frame of a pair of glasses for several reasons including to replace a damaged lens or swap one style or color of lens for another. Designers and manufacturers create a wide variety of frame and lens styles to suit various cosmetic or other preferences and needs. As a result, the way a lens attaches to a frame also varies. A lens may be attached to a frame via screws, monofilament wrapped in a groove around the bottom of the lens, or tied to the frame or grooves in the frame.

Instructions

Lay a piece of soft, lint-free microfiber cloth down on your work surface.

Pick up your glasses and determine the size and type of screw (for example, flat or cross-head) and then select a matching screwdriver from your screwdriver kit.

Place the glasses on your work surface.

Grasp the glasses gently with your nondominant hand by the frame and lens on the side opposite to the lens you're removing.

Insert the tip of your screwdriver into the screw top and, holding the screwdriver shaft perpendicular to your work surface, turn the handle counterclockwise to unscrew. Shake the screw from the frame onto your work surface when finished.

Pull the top or bottom of the frame encasing the lens away from it gently and remove the lens.

Prepare your work surface by placing a microfiber cloth on it.

Pick up your glasses in your nondominant hand and trace the monofilament line with your fingertip from the bottom edge of the lens to the points where it ties to the frame on the sides of the lens.

Snip the line at these points.

Pull the frame at these points gently from the cut line and then slide the lens away from the line. If you can't slide the lens away, grasp one end of the line, peel it from the groove on the bottom edge and remove the lens.

Pick up your glasses by the lens and frame on one side.

Grasp the nosepiece and pull it down away from the lens if dealing with an all-in-one, one-piece lens constructed with the right and left lenses joined as often seen in wraparound sunglasses. If dealing with glasses that have two lenses, pull the nosepiece away from the side of the lens you're removing.

Pull the center of a one-piece lens from the frame, unsnap each corner of the frame above the lens and then slide the lens from the frame. If removing a lens from glasses that have two lenses, simply slide the lens from the frame after pulling away the nosepiece.
