Silver is among the most commonly used metals in jewelry making. Pure silver is a precious metal that is highly ductile. This ductility is accompanied by a softness that does not lend well to jewelry making. Hence, pure silver is alloyed with metals like copper, iron, or sometimes even steel to obtain sterling silver which is harder. The ductility is retained and fine jewelry can be created with sterling silver which is 92.5% silver and 7.5% alloying metals. Sterling jewelry is often a combination of precious stones or pearls embedded into sterling silver. This embedding or setting of gems may be done using several techniques.

Prong Setting

Precious stones are held firmly in sterling silver pieces shaped like claws. This is also known as claw setting. This type of gem stone setting is often used in rings. The gem is held amid the prongs or claws of the metal within a basin shaped depression. This setting ensures the gem is held snugly while the cut, clarity and brilliance of the gem is made apparent. Care should be taken to ensure the prongs have rounded edges to prevent damage to the stone in the setting or even damage to delicate clothes or skin. Sterling silver engagement rings are commonly set with prong setting solitaires.

Bezel Setting

A band of sterling silver runs along the entire circumference of a gem stone, holding its base and edges firmly. This type of setting is called bezel setting. It is a common type of setting for delicate and fragile gems like opals. It is common to find the bezel setting in pendants and rings. This setting protects the stone and also provides greater exposure to the top of the stone (crown).

Channel Setting

Sterling silver bracelets and bangles are most often made with gems embedded between two thin bands of sterling silver. Multiple gems run along the circumference of the bangle within the grip of two parallel metal strips. This setting is known as channel setting and accommodates many gems, adding grandeur to the ornament.

Pave Setting

Pave setting involves the setting of small gems along with small pieces of sterling silver to create an image of glitter as the entire ornament looks strewn with closely spaced diamonds or other gems. Engagement ring bands, pendants and even certain body jewelry are made with pave setting. White metals like sterling silver, when used with diamonds, allow for greater illumination dramatics in the ornament.

Invisible Setting

Fine wire meshes of sterling silver are made to clasp gem stones together to make it seem like the gems are afloat above the metal. This is also well adapted to engagement ring settings. However, it is an expensive type of setting as more precision labor is required.

Tension Setting

This is a type of jewelry setting that requires a strong metal to firmly hold the stone. It engages a band of metal that remains in tight contact with the gem by use of pressure or tension. Sterling silver rings with pearls held in tension are an example of this setting. A tension settings, like the invisible setting, is also one of the most expensive setting styles.
