Jewelry is made from a variety of materials. Tree nuts, found throughout the world, can add an intriguing element to jewelry as many nuts used for jewelry-making purposes hardly resemble nuts at all.
Kukui Nut
Native to the Hawaiian Islands, the Kukui tree produces a nut that is suitable for making jewelry. Kukui is the state tree for Hawaii, and the islanders continue to utilize portions of the Kukui tree for a multitude of uses from cooking to candle-making. The nuts of the Kukui tree are typically 2 to 4 inches in diameter, making them ideal for necklaces and bracelets. The relatively round nuts can be painted or used in a natural state.
Tagua Nut
The avocado-shaped nuts of the Tagua tree can be used for jewelry design as the nut can be as large as 3 inches in diameter. Tagua nuts can be easily carved as they are soft enough to be shaped and large enough to allow for room when creating unique shapes. Tagua nuts can also be used in their natural form as they are large enough to have holes drilled through them to string on necklaces and bracelets.
Nickernut
Nickernuts come from what is commonly known asOthe warri tree. Indigenous to the Caribbean, the nuts resemble gray marbles or round stones. Using nickernuts requires drilling through the tough nuts to string them for jewelry. The nuts are also small enough, averaging the size of a chestnut, to be glued on to larger jewelry pieces such as chunky bracelets or pendants.
Buckeyes
Though not suitable for human consumption, buckeyes can be put to use when making jewelry. Found throughout Ohio, buckeye trees are common enough that the state is known as the "Buckeye State." Buckeyes are flat on one side and curved on the other. This makes buckeyes suitable for making jewelry where the nut will be attached via the flat side such as on bracelets, pendants, anklets or even earrings.
