How to Wrap an Indian Scarf Around the Body

Both Indian men and women wear a scarf, known as a dupatta, with most of their traditional and everyday outfits. The scarf adds dimension and flair to the outfit as well as serves as a functional item. During daily wear, the dupatta is used to cover the head when visiting temples or gurudwaras, wrapped around the face while driving and provides warmth on cool days. The dupatta also enables the wearer to switch from casual to a semi-formal look with only a few changes as to how it is draped across the body.

Instructions

Fold the dupatta in half and grab the middle with your hand. Place the center of the dupatta at the front of your neck and drape the remainder over both shoulders, allowing it to hang down your back. This is a common, everyday way to wear the dupatta and has the benefit of accentuating a slim silhouette.

Pull the dupatta slightly down from your neck and allow the center to drape over your bust line. Wearing the dupatta this way will add lift to your face and cover any cleavage that may be showing.

Tie a knot in the two ends of the dupatta behind your back. This will keep the dupatta from falling off or slipping as you go about your daily routine and activities.

Pin the dupatta in place at the shoulders and allow the remainder of the dupatta to fall freely over and down your arms. This will provide you with extra warmth while maintaining ease of movement during daily wear.

Remove the dupatta, untie it, fold it into 4- to 6-inch-wide pleats and place it over one shoulder. If needed, lay the dupatta across a flat surface and press it gently with your hand to remove any wrinkles. This is a formal method of wearing the dupatta.

Cover figure flaws and add dimension to your silhouette by placing the center of the dupatta at the back of your neck and allowing the ends to flow over the front of your body.
