How to Restore a Kate Spade Bag

Restoring a used or pre-loved Kate Spade handbag is a great way to get a designer bag on a budget. Even the most battered handbag can be restored to nearly-new condition. All you need are a few inexpensive supplies and the willingness to put in a little work. Most of the supplies can be found at your local grocery or home improvement store, but some may only be available online in your area.

Clean your Kate Spade bag with mild dish soap, warm water and a soft toothbrush. In most cases, you can spot clean the leather or fabric, but for bags that are very dirty, you may have to soak the bag in warm water to get all of the dirt out. Allow the bag to dry thoroughly on a flat surface before doing anything else to it.

Make repairs to the bag if necessary. Many bags are missing zipper pulls or have loose seams and threads. These things are easy to repair.

Dye any spots on the bag that have been stained or rubbed. Many Kate Spade bags will show wear on the corners. You can fix this by lightly applying a thin coat of leather or fabric dye in a matching color. Allow the dye to dry thoroughly.

Condition the bag. If your Kate Spade bag is made of microfiber or other fabric, a fabric protectant is necessary to keep dirt off the material and preserve the fabric. For leather, there are many products that will keep the leather shiny and supple while allowing it to breathe.

Polish the hardware. If your bag has metal hardware, polish it with a clean, soft cloth. For tarnished hardware, a product such as brass cleaner may be necessary to remove the tarnish. Do not let the brass cleaner come in contact with the bag, as it will ruin leather and fabric surfaces.
