How to Tell if a Diamond is Real With a Black Light

The old saying may state that diamonds are a girl's best friend, but if you find yourself with a real diamond on your hands, its value can make it anyone's best friend. There are a number of ways to test to see if your diamond is real. One such method, the ultraviolet test, involves holding the diamond under a black light and observing the results.

Instructions

Turn off as much light as you can around you. Draw curtains or shades to block out natural light, or work at night. Turn off other forms of artificial light.

Hold the diamond in your hand and activate the black light. Turn the diamond directly under the beam of the black light.

Observe the results. If the diamond produces a medium or strong blue fluorescence or glow, it is a real diamond. If the diamond remains dull or puts out a very light blue shade, it may be a fake diamond.
