How to Tell if a Burberry Vintage Backpack Is Real?

United Kingdom-based fashion house Burberry is most known for its classic trench coats and iconic plaid. The plaid, officially called a check, can be seen on jewelry, scarves, rain boots, umbrellas, handbags and more. Burberry items are recognizable and sought-after, which means the market is flooded with knockoffs. The best way to ensure that youre buying an authentic Burberry product is to purchase it from a Burberry store or other reputable retailer, such as a department store. However, if you have your eye on a product that Burberry no longer manufactures, such as a vintage backpack model, check a few details to ensure youre spending your money wisely.

Instructions

Examine the pattern on the backpack. The classic Burberry check consists of three faint navy blue stripes on a tan background, with a soft white in between the stripes. A single thin red stripe runs in the center between each set of blue stripes. If your backpack does not have this exact pattern, it is not authentic.

Examine the placement of the pattern. The stripes on Burberry bags will align at the seam, and the pattern should be completely symmetrical.

Study the construction of the backpack. If you find loose or uneven stitches, misaligned seams or poorly-applied logos, youre probably dealing with a fake.

Check the font on any buttons, snaps or other logos. The word Burberry should be written in all capital letters. Look closely at each R. On the official Burberry logo, the left bottom of the R has an extended base reaching toward the bottom right. Also ensure that "Burberry" is spelled correctly on all logos.

Ensure that the backpack comes with a paper tag that is square and very dark blue. The words Burberry London should be centered in silver lettering.

Check the tag on the inside of the bag. It should read "Made in Italy" and have a code printed beneath the words.
