How to Wear a Victorian Hat

When wearing a Victorian hat, be sure to have the rest of the look, or at least a few key elements. Victorian hats complemented a Victorian woman's hairstyle. So before putting on the hat, consider fixing your hair up Victorian style. Sweep it back with a plethora of curls or add some height to your hair by piling it. This will also give you something to pin your hat to. Beyond that, consider adding a few other accessories to enhance your Victorian look, such as a broad collar necklace or a shawl.

Instructions

Perch your hat atop your head, balanced and centered. The front brim should dip slightly in the front.

Wear the hat at a slight rakish tilt, angled to one side, rather than centered, if you prefer. This is also proper for a Victorian hat.

Pin the hat in place with hat pins. This will require that you have a hairstyle suitable for pinning. Simply insert the long hat pin through one side of the hat, through your hairstyle, and let the tip come back out the opposite side of the hat. Use two, one from each side, to anchor your hat.

Alternatively, you can pin from one side of the hat. Insert the pin into the hat, pushing it through the hair then back out the same side of the hat, much as you would push a pin through a lapel. Pin with the pointed end toward the back.

Add a shawl, a large broach or collar necklace to complement your Victorian hat.
