How to Restore Antique Mourning Hair Jewelry

Mourning hair jewelry derives mainly from the Victorian era. These hair accessories are themselves made of hair, typically from the deceased individual. Woven or braided into intricate patterns, this mourning accessory could be worn throughout the mourning period, which typically lasted at least a year. Restoring this antique jewelry requires delicacy and attention to both the hair used to create the ornamentation and the metal or wood that serves as the hairpiece's base.

Instructions

    1

Inspect the hair for any lose wrappings or decaying elements. If an area requires repairs, you must make them prior to cleaning. Otherwise, you may further damage the piece. Unfortunately, there is very little, if anything you can do if the hair itself requires repairing. Attempting to fix the hair may result in the design unraveling. If, however, you absolutely cannot avoid fixing the hair, do so with extreme caution. Try pushing the hair in the direction it lies in the design using the pads of two fingers. Do not force the hair into a new position, doing so will only damage it. Tuck any hanging pieces under the design so they are not visible. Do not cut the hair.

    2

Inspect the accessory's base for any necessary repairs. Check the wood or metal that attached to the hair for any decay or malfunctioning. Repair any problems with light glue, being sure to not have any glue attach to the hair. If the piece is metal and malfunctioning, determine whether it must be entirely replaced and whether it is possible to do so. If you can remove the hair from its base without damaging the hair, you may want to attach it to a new base.

    3

Clean the base before cleaning the hair. Mix a small amount of baking soda with water. Using a soft cloth or Q-tip, clean the metal or wood base with the solution. This initial cleaning may not remove all of the dirt, but it will help you identify the places that require a more thorough cleaning.

    4

Thoroughly clean any remaining dirty areas. If the base is wood and still requires cleaning after the initial sweep, slightly dampen the cloth or Q-tip with warm water and rub over its surface. Wood is extremely porous, so be careful to not saturate it by using an overly wet cloth or Q-tip. Dry any cleaned areas with another cloth or Q-tip immediately after you are done cleaning.

    5

It is extremely difficult, and not recommended, to clean the hair on antique hair jewelry. The hair is old, dry and, as such, prone to breakage. If you must clean the hair, however, do so with a dry cloth, rubbing the dirty spot in the same direction as it lays. This will reduce, but not prevent, the hair from breaking or coming loose.
