How to Spot an Expensive Designer Belt at a Thrift Store

For thrift store shoppers, locating an expensive item for a ridiculously low price is like finding buried treasure on a deserted island. While getting a great deal is important for the frugal shopper, determining what is an expensive item is an equally important skill. If you are shopping at a thrift store for a pricey designer belt, there are clues to help you determine the high-end belt from a lower-quality accessory.

Instructions

    1

Visit a high-end store to examine good-quality belts. Before shopping at a thrift store, try on a variety of pricey belts at stores that carry designer merchandise. By browsing the selection of fine leather, silk and suede belts at these high-end stores, you will get a sense of how an expensive belt should hang, feel and look.

    2

At a thrift store, look for recognizable brand names. Turn the belt over to find the manufacturer's label on the underside. A fabric label or the designer's name -- embossed or printed on the back of the belt -- can indicate quality. Check for special design touches on the belt such as embroidery, exotic skin or fancy rivets that make the belt different from ordinary belts sold at a lower price point.

    3

Touch the material for fake leather or inferior fabric clues. Run your fingers over the fabric to check for rough, shiny or smooth materials. For example, an expensive leather belt should feel smooth and have a distinctive leather smell. Suede belts should have a silky nap that can be combed with the tips of your fingers. SecondCherry's website says, "The deeper the pile on a velvet garment, the more expensive it should be."

    4

Identify faulty or haphazard seams. All seams on an expensive leather belt should be straight and sewn properly. Pulling and puckering at the seams are indicators of an inexpensive belt. If the seams slightly pull apart when handled, that also indicates a cheap belt.

    5

Check for solid hardware. An expensive leather belt will have solid hardware that is not hollow to the touch. A pricey belt buckle and prong will be heavy and will not tarnish easily after a few wearings.
