How to Tell Real Gucci Handbags From Fakes

With fake Gucci purses sold online by unscrupulous vendors, bargain-hunting bag lovers need clues to identify the real purses from the pretenders. If you can't afford the retail prices at upscale department stores or Gucci boutiques, but you still want the real thing, you need insider information to determine a bag's authenticity. Using a few expert tips, you can determine authentic Gucci merchandise from cheaply crafted fakes.

Check for inferior quality zippers, hardware and clasps. Gucci uses heavy and sturdy brass hardware in the construction of its purses. Examine bags to see if they have cheap plastic zippers instead of sturdy metal YKK zippers. If the handbag's clasps are hard to fasten, the bag is fake.

View the lining. The inside lining of a bag is a good indicator of overall quality. If you see a handbag lined in plastic-looking or wrinkly fabric that bunches at the seams, it is not a Gucci product.

Examine the identification card. Gucci handbags come with an identification or "controllato" card. Controllato is the Italian word for checked. This card signifies that the bag is authentic and has passed Gucci's quality standards. The name "Gucci" is printed on the front of the card in capital letters. The word "controllato" will be located below the Gucci name in lowercase letters. Both words are centered.

Ask for a Gucci dust bag. According to Bag Vanity, real Gucci products are sold with two types of dust bags. The dust bag will have the double G logo or the name "Gucci" written in gold lettering across its front. If the bag is wrapped in plastic, it is not authentic.

Check the seams for faulty stitching. An authentic Gucci purse will feature even seams along the sides and bottom of the bag. A real Gucci will not pucker at the seams or have threads dangling off the purse.
