Tiara Components

Tiaras are a smaller version of a crown with an open top and often designed with a gap at the rear. Tiaras are thought to been worn first by royalty in Asia. They now serve as essential parts of formal dress for women at events such as proms and weddings. Tiaras make wonderful gifts and are far less expensive to make than to buy. There are many components of a tiara, knowledge of which is essential if you're making one.

A tiara base resembles a headband and acts as the support for the rest of the piece. Tiara bases come in a variety of materials from plastic to metal. Expensive, formal tiara bases are made from gold or silver. A tiara base is more traditional and crown like and will require the use of combs. A headband is used for a more low-key modern tiara, and does not require combs. Headbands can be made from any material.

Combs are added to a tiara base to secure the tiara to a woman's hair. The combs are secured to the base using either glue or wire and come in materials to match the tiara base. The combs are generally inserted into an up do or other configuration of hair to keep the tiara in place atop the head. The combs are not generally seen once the tiara is in place.

Wire is used to build up the tiara, creating the base for the shapes and adds the structure involved in a crown-like shape. The best wire for tiara making is made from brass which is very flexible. Brass wire comes in silver or gold color to match the base or headband. Wire width varies from a very thin .2 mm and goes up to about 1 mm. The thinnest wire is ideal for creating delicate designs and for beading. The thickest wire is for creating tall designs and structures upon which to adhere rhinestones, flowers and other embellishments.

Tiaras are most often embellished with rhinestones and crystals. Rhinestones are less expensive and are for less elegant tiaras. The nicest tiaras use Swaraovski crystals which are clear, have a vibrant shine and are quite expensive. Crystals vary in size, all of which can be used on any one tiara. Pearl and metallic beads are also threaded on thin wire and used as embellishment in coordination with or instead of crystals. More contemporary tiaras use flowers, fabric and ribbon bows over or instead of wire. Mesh is often added to the tiara to incorporate a veil for a wedding.
