Instructions for a Duct Tape Belt

Duct tape is a versatile type of tape that can be used for many repairs---and crafts as well. Duct tape can be used to create fashion accessories, such as belts, purses and wallets. Making belts with duct tape allows you to create custom sizes and styles. You can also find duct tape in colors to match almost any outfit, as compared to the possible limitations of color choices for store-bought belts.

Construct the belt itself from any color of duct tape that you like. Make the belt long enough to allow 6 inches of slack when it is wrapped around your waist. When laying strips of duct tape together, smooth them as you position them to avoid bubbles or inconsistencies. Also, keep any tape seams on the inside, so they aren't visible when you are wearing your belt.

Choose another color of duct tape to decorate the belt. A complementary color or a different shade of the same color will create a polished look. Although intricate designs may be visually appealing, they will be difficult to cut out when you work with duct tape. Simple stripes are easiest to cut and apply. If you do choose a complicated design, achieve it with precut decals, or draw the design directly on the tape with permanent markers.

Add grommets to one side of the belt with a grommet punch to secure your belt buckle. You can purchase grommets and a grommet punch at most craft stores. Work with 3/8-inch grommets that are machine washable. Even though you should not wash your belt, machine-washable grommets are rust-proof, which protects them in case they accidentally get wet.

If you do not want to add grommets to your belt design, choose a different style of belt buckle, such as a snap or clip buckle. Tang buckles work best with duct-tape belts, because the duct tape itself may be too thin to be held properly by the other buckle choices.
