Varieties and Styles of Beaded Necklaces

Whether in fashion magazines or in trendy boutiques, beaded necklaces vary in style and design. Create your own personalized and colorful necklaces for a fraction of the cost of premade. Use beads and various trims to create jewelry that will inspire envy in your friends.

Bib necklaces are an elegant accessory for many outfits. You can use a basic bead-stringing technique and wooden, plastic or pearl beads for this style of necklace. Begin by creating a centerpiece of three stacked rings, using nylon wire. Use a metal crimp at the top to hold the beads in place. Make a sidepiece, using a 55-inch length of wire to make four interlocking loops. The bottom and third loop are connected to the center and top loop of the centerpiece. Repeat for a second sidepiece. Use the extra wire at the top of both sidepieces to attach a jewelry clasp.

A station necklace is made up of stations, or groups of single or multiple beads. These stations are then connected, using either beading wire or chain to make the longer necklace. Before beginning, decide the amount of beads in each station, the number of stations on the necklace, and how long the chain will be. Thread beads for the station on a piece of beading wire, and then wrap the wire into a loop on each side of the station to hold the beads in place. Attach the pieces of chain to the wire loops to form a single strand. Add jewelry clasps on the ends.

Chokers are a short necklace that you can create using trim from the craft store. Use a piece of ribbon with a beaded netted trim in any color. Add a velvet ribbon in a matching shade, and a length of flower trim that blends well with the velvet and beaded trim. Measure your neck and cut ribbons and trim to fit. Use hot glue to attach the velvet ribbon to the beaded trim ribbon. Place a dab of glue on the back of each flower and place it on the velvet ribbon. For a variation, create small lengths of beaded wire and pinch them between two lengths of colorful ribbon.

Long rope necklaces are versatile and stylish. These are usually strands of pearl beads, but can also be composed of lightweight beads. Cut a piece of flexible beading wire to the length desired. Place a crimping bead on one end to hold the beads in place. Begin stringing lightweight beads on the wire. Once you cover the entire length, secure the end with a crimping bead and make loops at both ends. Add variety to the necklace with contrasting colored beads or beads of different size along its length.
