Ribbon Instructions for Knitted Bonnets

Knitted bonnets and caps have been popular for centuries. Their construction is relatively simple, but they can be embellished by adding ribbon to the finished product. The two main ways of attaching ribbon to a knitted bonnet are sewing two pieces to the edges or weaving a single piece around its opening. Since not all knitted bonnets are designed the same, the process used to attach the ribbon won't always be the same. It's as much a matter of taste as it is function. Hemming the edges of the ribbon prevents fraying.

Instructions

Sewing Ribbon to a Knitted Bonnet

    1

Select a ribbon that matches the knitted bonnet. If your bonnet is constructed from a single color of yarn, choose a complementary color for the ribbon. Use one of the accent colors for your ribbon selection if the bonnet has multiple colors.

    2

Cut the ribbon into two equal lengths. Each ribbon should be approximately 2 feet in length to allow for the decorative folding at the base of the tie.

    3

Fold the end of the ribbon over slightly. Place the folded section onto the corner of the bonnet's opening and sew it to the bonnet. Match the thread to the ribbon so that it's less visible. Use enough stitches so that the ribbon is secure.

    4

Fold the ribbon into the shape of a bow or a similar shape. With each fold, bring the ribbon back to the center point and either hold or pin it in place while you continue folding. Stitch the bow in place at the center point; making sure that the needle goes through each piece of ribbon before passing through the bonnet.

    5

Hem the remaining end of the ribbon. This prevents it from fraying with repeated tyings and keeps it looking neat. Repeat this process on both sides of the bonnet.

Weaving Ribbon Through a Knitted Bonnet

    6

Cut your chosen ribbon into a single 3-foot length. If the knitted bonnet is for a child, measure a length that will fit the child's head and extend roughly 1 foot from the corners of the bonnet. For this process it's best to use a thinner ribbon.

    7

Twist one end of the ribbon so it looks like the end of a shoelace. Secure its twisted position with masking tape.

    8

Wind the ribbon along the edge of the bonnet. Slip the shoelace-like end of the ribbon through the stitches of yarn in an over-under pattern. To make sure that it doesn't damage the shape of the bonnet, the ribbon should be set approximately 1/2-inch in from the front edge. Remove the tape and untwist the ribbon once it's been woven along the entire edge.

    9

Hem both ends of the ribbon.
