What Is a Hobo Purse?

When women shop for purses, they typically look for one that is both functional and fashionable. The hobo purse has provided women with both of those qualities for more than 50 years. Since its humble beginnings as a carry-all for train-hopping hobos, the hobo-style purse has stood the test of time and remains popular, functional and stylish, with many price ranges and designs to choose from.

The word "hobo" was commonly used in the late 1800's and first part of the 20th century to identify homeless people who hitched rides on railroad cars. The hobos carried their belongings in a bindle that was tied to two long sticks. The long sticks allowed them to carry their belongings over their shoulders. Using the hobo bindle concept as inspiration, handbag designers began advertising and marketing a purse called the "hobo". By the mid-1900's, the design was all over the fashion world. Decades later, the bag has retained its popularity.

A hobo purse can be identified by its soft material and crescent shape. Due to the pliable material that is typically used for the bag, the purse loses its crescent shape when it is set down.

In addition to its recognizable shape, a hobo purse features a short, wide-width shoulder strap. Women typically carry it slung over their shoulder, with the bag tucked behind their arms or in the bend of the elbow.

Hobo purses typically are made of soft leather or canvas. However, other matherials can be used. The price of the purse does vary according to the material used, as well as the name of the purse designer.

Hobo purses should be considered if you tend to carry a lot of bulky items in your purse. Because of the pliable material, the hobo purse never appears to be bulky, no matter how many items are inside of it.
