Types of Progressive Lenses

Progressive lenses are spectacle lenses that are used when you need to see in the distance and also read up close. The lenses are also called invisible or no-line bifocals and come in many different styles. Understanding the differences in types of progressives can help you decide which type of lens is right for you.

Benefits

One of the biggest advantages of progressive lenses is that you can see at more than one focal point, or distance, to read. Regular bifocals and trifocals have a distinct and limited distance where you can see through the reading portion. Progressive lenses have power that progresses from just under the eye down through the bottom of the lens, allowing you to read and see at multiple points. Another obvious benefit to the lenses is that the lines are not visible so the lenses do not look like bifocals and are cosmetically appealing.

Function

Progressive lenses have a bifocal area that is shaped like an inverted V, with the point of the V starting just below your pupil. The progressive power increases as the lens gets wider. The middle of the V between the pupil and the bottom of your frame is called the corridor and is the part of the progressive lens used to read things that are held at about arm's length. The bottom of the lens is where lined bifocals usually sit, and this part of the lens is used to read things up close.

Features

Lens manufactures design and make different size lenses and corridors, based on how you will use the lens. The main difference in progressive lens styles is the size of the reading portion and size of the middle corridor.

There are lenses that have a wider bottom portion and work better if you do a lot of reading and close work. Other progressive lenses have a wider middle portion and are designed to help people who work and read more at a slight distance, such as on computers or sewing machines. According to progressive lens manufacturer Varilux.com, the middle portion of a no-line lens can allow you to read at a distance of 3 feet to as far away as 20 feet, depending on the style of progressive.

Material

Progressive lenses can be made from any optical lens material including glass, plastic, polycarbonate and even the kind that changes from light lenses inside to dark lenses outside. If you have a strong prescription, glass lenses are not a good option because they are usually too heavy.

Size

The best type of lenses and frames for progressive lenses are larger frames with larger lenses. Smaller frames can be used but the style of progressive lens may be compromised. If the frame and lens area is too small, the progressive lens will not completely fit within the edges of the lens and the bottom reading portion can be cut off. If you prefer a smaller frame, you can usually get a modified style of progressive lens that will have a reduced reading and middle area. They do not function as well as the larger progressives. Your eye care professional can measure your frame and lenses to determine the kind of progressive lens that will work with the frame you choose.
