How to Wear a Yoga Shoulder Strap

A yoga shoulder strap provides an easy and efficient way to carry your yoga mat from the car to the yoga studio or from the studio to your front closet. The strap neatly contains the yoga mat so that it doesn't unroll or bunch up. Wearing the yoga shoulder strap is also a simple way to distribute the weight of your mat and anything else you might be carrying (including a towel or blanket) evenly on your shoulders, preventing shoulder aches and pains.

Instructions

Roll up your yoga mat neatly before or after your yoga class and then hook the strap's two short loops around both ends of your mat so that it's evenly balanced. Pull tightly on the straps so that they are secured around the yoga mat.

Place the longer shoulder strap around your shoulder and let the mat either fall behind or in front of your body, depending on which position is most comfortable. Make sure the yoga shoulder strap is the appropriate length---it shouldn't impede your walking, nor should it come too high up under your arms.

Switch shoulders periodically; people tend to carry things over one shoulder repeatedly, which can place stress on the joint and necessitate more yoga stretches for the shoulders. By switching from your right to your left shoulder regularly, you will keep your body in better balance.

Wash the strap occasionally to prevent buildup of bacteria or other contaminants on the strap. Likewise, regularly wash the mat that you carry with your strap.
