Techniques for How to Tie a 30-Inch Square Scarf

A 30-inch square scarf has enough fabric to be a hairband or a belt as well as a neckerchief. A large scarf can add just the right amount of coverage make a cocktail dress suitable for the office. A bright scarf with a bold pattern makes a dramatic accent when worn with your favorite little black dress or wear a solid scarf to accent a print.

Fold the scarf in half diagonally. Drape the folded edge around your neck with the 45-degree angles hanging down in front. Tie a loose knot by wrapping the right point over and around the left point so that the right point is hanging down in front. Wrap this front point over the other point making an "X." Continue to wrap the point around so that it comes up through the hole at the top of the "X." Pull the pointed ends out to each side to tighten the knot. This knot is called a sailor knot. It has a plain flat front that is well suited to a scarf. Leave the knot hanging down in front or pull it toward your shoulder and hold it in place with a decorative pin. You can also use a safety pin to pin the back side of the knot to your clothing. For a different look, pull the point at the back of the scarf to the front and wear it with the knot behind your neck. This is a good way to cover the neckline of a cocktail dress.

Roll the scarf diagonally to make a long narrow tube. When a 30-inch scarf is rolled on the diagonal it is long enough to wear as a belt or a sash. Use a sailor knot to tie it around your waist. This roll also makes an attractive headband with long ties.

Pleat a scarf by folding a 1-inch fold along one side. Turn the scarf over and fold another 1-inch pleat. Continue folding until the whole scarf is pleated. Tie the pleated scarf around your neck like a choker with the ends of the scarf even. The ends will fan out attractively. Position the ends of the scarf on the side of your neck if you are wearing a collarless shirt or put them in the center of your neck and tuck them into your blouse or jacket.

Fold the scarf in half diagonally and wrap the folded side around your chest, tying the ends behind your back. Tie the other two corners together behind your neck.
