How to Weave a Brimmed Hat

Brimmed hats are ideal for keeping the sun out of your eyes or making a fun fashion statement. Summer brimmed hats are wide-brimmed and made from straw or lighter material while winter hats are made out of heavier material and usually have a half-brim in the front. It is fairly simple to weave a durable half-brimmed hat by crocheting with yarn.

Instructions

Knot yarn around crochet hook.

Chain three crochet knots on the crochet hook and join them together. Make another knot, and pull the three knots off of the crochet hook. This will be "chain 1."

Make 10 half-double crochet knots. Instead of joining them together, crochet right into the next stitch.

Stitch 2 half-double crochet knots. Stitch the half-doubles by putting the crochet hook between the stitch (three loops should be on top of the hook.)

Crochet 20 more half-double crochet stitches. Knot the different colored yarn marker to the last stitch to mark where each crochet round will end.

Stitch 30 more half-double crochet stitches, alternating between one half-double crochet and two half-double crochet stitches.

Stitch 40 half-double crochet stitches by alternating between two stitches of individual half-double crochet stitches, and two half-double crochets within the same stitch. Stagger the increases so the rounds do not line up on top of each other.

Stitch 50 more half-double stitches by alternating between three individual half-double stitches, then two half-doubles in the same stitch.

Stitch 60 more stitches by alternating between four individual half-double crochets and one half-double stitch.

Crochet 14 more rounds of stitches with 60 stitches for each round by making one half-double crochet between each stitch.

Once finished the last round, skip one half-double crochet and make a slip stitch by crocheting a knot at the edge of the hat so it is nearly invisible.

Make the brim by stitching two half-double crochets for 38 stitches. (Two brim stitches between each hat stitch, which will make the crochets flare out to create the brim.)

Skip one stitch and make a slip stitch. Slip stitch again into the next stitch. Turn the hat around and make one half-double crochet between each half-double crochet stitch for another 38 stitches.

Slip stitch into the next stitch on the hat and turn the hat around.

Stitch one half-double crochet between each half-double crochet for another 38 stitches. (The last round.)

Slip stitch onto the next stitch on the hat, secure the yarn, and cut the piece of yarn.
