The decision to choose glasses or contact lenses is an important one. Because they're expensive, and most insurance plans only cover one or the other, you have to be sure you know what you want to avoid being stuck with your decision or paying high replacement costs. Most people who get eye corrections start out with glasses and move to contacts later, if at all. There are several benefits to choosing glasses over contacts.
Eye Protection
Glasses offer a small amount of eye protection, especially from the wind. People who wear glasses, then switch to contacts have to readjust to blinking for eye protection. This protection is especially valuable on windy days where debris and dust might enter the eye. Glasses don't offer comprehensive eye protection and shouldn't be used in place of safety goggles.
Cost
Glasses are cheaper than contacts in many cases. You only have to make one purchase with glasses, and if they break, you can get them repaired. Contacts cannot be repaired and must be completely replaced if damaged. Depending on how often you must dispose of your contacts, you could be purchasing dozens of pairs of lenses for the year.
Length of Use
One pair of glasses can last you for years, depending on how rapidly your vision changes. Contacts need to be continually replaced. If you run out of contacts and don't have money to purchase more, you won't be able to see. This is not the case with glasses.
Fashionable
Glasses are part of popular fashion trends. They communicate information about your style and personality. For many people, glasses are such a part of their look that it's startling to see them without their glasses. Contact lenses have the ability to change your eye color, but they're not regarded as a fashion accessory the way glasses are.
No Eye Touching or Infection
Eye touching is a big turnoff for some people, especially those prone to eye infections. Inserting and removing contacts can damage the eye and introduce harmful bacteria to it. Glasses slip on the face with practically no risk of causing eye infection or corneal damage.
