Tiara Etiquette

Absent a wedding, prom or pageant, only the most formal occasions allow for tiaras past the age of five or six. Tiara etiquette rules have relaxed since ancient times when they were reserved for women with the highest status, but they still are not generally worn to a ball game or grocery shopping. How then can you wear your tiara proudly, as a beautiful accent without looking like you are wearing a Halloween costume? Start by considering the occasion and the rest of your outfit.

Televised coverage of royal weddings often return us to our childhood fantasies of becoming princesses. Sparkling tiaras always feature prominently in the pictures of beautiful royal brides. According to British sources, tiaras are not reserved for royalty. Rather the occasion dictates the appropriateness of the accessory. British rules imply that a woman should wear her first tiara at her wedding because, according to the Telegraph, they symbolize the "loss of innocence and the crowning of love." After that, certain formal affairs, such as the opening of Parliament require a tiara.

Despite British admonishments that a women shouldn't wear a tiara before her wedding day, many American girls wear them to their proms. This also violates the etiquette rule stating that tiaras should not be worn in hotels. Beyond the prom, tiaras are a mandatory accessory for many unmarried beauty pageant winners. Some pageants, such as the Miss Clark County pageant in Wisconsin, actually require the winner to promise in her contract that she will wear it to all of her "official appearances," but never with jeans.

Hispanic influences in America provide another occasion when tiaras are not only acceptable, but are expected. The Quienceanera is a rite of passage for a Hispanic girl on her fifteenth birthday. Dressed in a ball gown and given a special tiara, the Quiencenerra holds court with her family and closest friends. She is welcomed into the church and community as an adult for the first time. The tiara symbolizes that she is a special, treasured member of the church, her family and her community.

Rules for how to wear a tiara dictate that it be worn as part of an elaborate hairstyle so that it looks like a beautiful accessory and doesn't overpower the person's gown. Ideally, your hair should at least partially fill in the back of it so that the jewels accent your hairstyle instead of hiding it. Make sure that your posture remains perfect. Not only will your tiara fall off you relax too much, but it's considered bad "form" to wear one with a casual attitude.
