Lip Ring Facts

A lip ring is a type of decoration or piercing used on the lip, typically off to one side. This style of jewelry is also known as a lip labret. The origins of this piercing date back to ancient times, but it is becoming popular once again.

Lip rings originated in Ethiopia and Mali, where the local Dogon and Nuba tribes pierced their lips. The practice is still done today by those same tribes.

Deciding on a lip ring is something that shouldn't be taken lightly. These piercings are slow to heal and can leave a scar even when cared for properly. Those who are interested in a lip ring should weigh all the facts carefully.

The process of piercing the lip involves cleaning the area, deciding on the placement, then puncturing the area with a sharp needle. The lip ring slides through the opening. The person doing the piercing then completes the nesting, which refers to moving the ring into the proper place and closing it.

It typically takes 6 to 10 weeks for a lip piercing to finish healing. Professionals recommend waiting that long before changing or removing the piercing.

Until the lip ring heals, the wearer should take precautions and use mouthwash to rid the mouth of bacteria, stop smoking (which can slow down the healing) and abstain from oral sex and kissing, which can introduce new bacteria into the mouth.
