Making Fabric Handbag Purse Handles

Making fabric handles for either your handbag or purse will help you update the look and style of your bag. In addition, replacing handles that may appear weathered or worn out will extend the life of your bag. Fabric handles must be made out of sturdy, non-stretch fabric in order to successfully carry the weight of the contents in your handbag or purse.

Prior to making the fabric handles that will attach to either your handbag or purse, it is important that you obtain the proper materials. You will need a pair of scissors and a tape measure to cut and measure the fabric for your handles. In addition, you will need thread and a sewing needle or a sewing machine, depending on your personal preference. If you would like to decorate your handles, you will need beads, rhinestones or whatever you want to place on the handles to make them stand out. For adhesives you will have to use a hot glue gun or super glue for the beads.

After obtaining the appropriate materials, you will need to begin crafting the actual handles. Start by measuring out a piece of fabric, placing it next to your bag to see what an appropriate size is. Once you have an appropriate length, cut the fabric to this size, allowing the width to be twice what you want it to eventually look like. From here, you will fold the piece of fabric in half, stitching one end of the fabric to the other. Fold the edges down before stitching to keep the sides of the handle smooth. In addition, you can iron your finished strap to flatten it out. Stitch it on both sides of the bag in four places, two for each handle, before completing work on the handles.

The materials you use to make the handles for your handbag or purse must be strong enough to hold weight without tearing or ripping. For this reason, upholstery fabrics should be prioritized over dress fabrics. Upholstery fabrics are traditionally thicker and more durable, making them more useful in this situation. Specific fabrics such as canvas and cotton can provide a solid support for your purse as well as the contents inside of it.

While making fabric purse handles is not a dangerous activity, using the proper safety precautions when handling machinery and sharp objects is mandatory. Make sure to place your needles in a pin cushion whenever they are not being used. Always keep your sewing machine turned off when you are not using it. If you are using an iron, try to keep your hands away from the face of the iron as well as keeping it turned off when not in use.
